Become a Volunteer – Make a Difference in Gem County

The Gem County Sheriff Posse is a dedicated group of volunteers who proudly support the Gem County Sheriff’s Office and our community. We provide essential emergency support, search and rescue assistance, community service, and aid as directed by the Sheriff of Gem County. In order to fulfill our purpose, it shall be the duty of every member to make every effort to be available when called out for an emergency, participate in the training needed to keep themselves prepared, and to conduct themselves at all times in a professional manner.

Our members are background-checked, sworn in by the Sheriff, and must carry a current CPR and First Aid card. We assist in real emergencies, searches, rescues, traffic control, and local events like the Gem/Boise County Fair & Rodeo and horse races, contributing thousands of volunteer hours each year to keep Gem County safe and strong.

Volunteering with the Posse offers no monetary pay—but it provides immense personal satisfaction, teamwork, training opportunities, and the chance to serve your neighbors when it matters most. Members agree to return all Posse-issued items (e.g., badge, ID card, radios, patches, apparel) upon termination without reimbursement.

Why Join Us?

  • Assist in emergencies, search and rescue, and community events
  • Gain skills in first aid, navigation (maps, GPS, compass), communications (UHF police radios), and more
  • Work alongside fellow volunteers who share a commitment to service
  • Use or provide equipment like horses/mules, 4WD vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, or boats (most member-supplied)
  • Build lasting connections while supporting law enforcement and public safety
